About Dan Shaffer

The Story Behind Your Bookmark

Each of these handmade wooden bookmarks was lovingly crafted by Dan Shaffer — a lifelong

woodworker, contractor, and cabinet maker who has spent more than 80 years creating with his

hands and heart.

Now 85 years old and never one to retire, Dan began making bookmarks in 2019 and has

created over 6,000 to date — each one carefully recorded and lovingly shaped in his Northern

Utah shop. When asked to help with a special gift for the Rebelle Rally, his immediate response

was a simple and heartfelt “Yes.”

He worked on these bookmarks in the dead of winter, taking only a short break when he was

hospitalized to have a heart stent placed. As soon as he was off oxygen, he returned to his

woodshop — heated by a wood stove — to finish the work he'd started.

One of my favorite memories from this journey was spending Saturdays side by side with my

dad, shaping and sanding each bookmark — sharing stories, sawdust, and a whole lot of love.

These bookmarks are more than wood — they’re symbols of craftsmanship, resilience, and

legacy. They’re given in love to women like you, who Team #184 admires and aspires to

become more like.

With gratitude,

Team #184
